Spiritual Underworld
The stale, musky air lingers in a cavernous place under the earth’s surface. A family lives in this desperation, clinging to whatever means necessary to maintain life and hope. Jack lives in this underworld. He’s a curious boy with a mischievous heart of gold. He knows nothing other than this secluded place that shelters only a few families. With all the basic necessities, he and his family live peacefully and unknowingly boxed in by earth and fearful unknowns.
Jack longs for more, but his parents have decided to keep him away from what they call the “world.” They talk of how harsh, unloving, and dark the world above them can be, so to strike fear in Jack and his siblings. Their tactics are a way to keep the kids close to their way of life. Though well intended, Jack’s parents didn’t tell the whole truth. They didn’t explain the grandeur of a beach sunset, the generosity of people striving to do good, or the many other beautiful expressions of common grace. Jack’s parents have brainwashed him into believing nothing good exists outside their controlled, musky darkness. They underestimated Jack’s tendency to explore and ask good questions. He underestimated the power of the world above.
Jack’s curiosity sparked and lit a flame in other boys within the subterranean prison. Jack began to ask questions that transcended his parents’ deception and control. Questions about how it all began? Was the world ever good? Could people always be harsh, or is there a remnant that offers grace, hope, and love? Jack’s questions begat more questions and led to faith beyond presumption and deception. Jack decided that he must walk out of the shadow of fear and into the light. After a secret search, Jack found a portal into a brighter future. The world offered both good and evil, and Jack realized that he must decide to walk in the light. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:4, NIV
The spiritual journey is going from darkness to light. No one fully arrives with all the answers. It takes time, input from other men, and the power of God. Questions can bring more questions. Each question is a guidepost toward the light of truth.
Just like every man, Jack had to step beyond the limitations and fear of his upbringing to live as a person of the light.
