Spiritual Wanderings
In the Bible, the spiritual life is never a solo ascent. Oh, how we can easily fall into the pit of idyllic grandeur of self-assertion. A quick read of the New Testament and you are shone a community striving towards the mission of God while expanding the Kingdom of God. The Bible is rife with men and women who courageously trusted God and had people around them as they rose to spiritual greatness. Consequently, the Bible has numerous people who foolishly stiff-armed God and others during moral and spiritual freefall. But the images we see in movies and read in novels are explicitly designed to trigger an exaggerated version of reality. Subsequently, they tempt us to attempt the steep trek at manliness alone. As a scorned cyclist rightly said, “Anyone who imagines they can work alone winds up surrounded by nothing but rivals, without companions. The fact is, no one ascends alone.” What a reminder for us men who are choosing to grow in Christlikeness! No one climbs alone. We stand in the shadow of giants and are here to help others ascend the mountain of manhood. Our ascension is with other sojourners by way of friendships and mentorships.
I don’t know what all God has in store for you, but I know you aren’t supposed to be alone.
