Stand Firm & Act Like Men with Pastor Joby Martin (EP. 268)

This week we finish The Restoration Series with a very special guest, Pastor Joby Martin! Joby Martin is the founder and lead pastor of The Church of Eleven22 (https://coe22.com) in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to providing The Church of Eleven22 with vision and leadership, Pastor Joby is a national and international preacher and teacher. Joby grew up in South Carolina and spent much of his Sunday mornings hunting and fishing, and not at Sunday service. Joby knew of God but knew nothing of Jesus being the propitiation of his sins.

He was at youth camp as a teenager and the counselors reenacted the crucifixion of Jesus, they gave a gospel presentation and a salvation invitation. Joby would later go back to that same camp in college, and started preaching.

It was at camp that one of the speakers said, “Some of you need to go into full-time vocational ministry,” and Joby felt like God was talking to directly to him.

So I went and talked to my pastor and he said, “God will always confirm what he calls,” and he invited me to be an intern. Job went on to launch his church in 2012.

At The Church of Eleven22, they are calling all men to stand up and act like men. “There is a real attack on manhood in today’s culture.” It’s a high holy calling to be created in the image of God as a man. To be a provider, protector, and servant king. The problem is that men have abdicated their responsibility to be advancers of the Kingdom of God

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV). The most dangerous thing a man can do say, “I got this.” You cannot act like a man until you bend your knee down to Jesus and have him help you do what you can’t do. To be a man is to imitate Jesus. It’s pride that leads men to say they got this on their own. We all need men in our lives, Mark 2 mat carriers, friends who will carry you to Jesus when you can’t walk. Write down those four men right now, if you can’t write those four men down you aren’t doing it right. The enemy is trying to steal kill destroy, we need a band of brothers to distinguish the flames of the enemy. Do you have friends that have enough faith that when you are in a tight spot you can borrow some of their faith?

  • He got accepted to med school, but abandoned that plan when he felt called to ministry

  • The problem is that men have abdicated their responsibility to be advancers of the Kingdom of God
  • “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force.” Matthew 11:12 (ASV)
  • “We want to call people to be who God called them to be.”
  • “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV)
    
  • That phrase act like men is the hub in the middle of the wheel and the imperatives around it are how we are to act like men
  • The most dangerous thing a man can do say, “I got this.”
  • You cannot act like a man until you bend your knee down to Jesus and have him help you do what you can’t do
  • To be a man is to imitate Jesus
  • Isolation is one of the key tools of the enemy
  • It’s pride that leads men to say they got this on their own
  • “Some men came, bringing to [Jesus] a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Mark 2:3-5
  • Write down 4 men in your life who are mat carriers, friends who will carry you when you can’t walk
  • You are going to need people to carry you to Jesus
  • If you can’t write those 4 men down you aren’t doing it right
  • You need men who see that you are out of line and call you out
  • Identify these men and deputize them, tell them, “I need you to do this for me and I am going to do it for you.”
  • Buddies are alright, you need brothers
  • The enemy is trying to steal kill destroy, we need a band of brothers to distinguish the flames of the enemy
  • Do you have friends that have enough faith that when you are in a tight spot you can borrow some of their fath?
  • Men get knocked down because they are isolated are they are not honest
  • You will only be as free as your willing to be honest
  • If you fight the devil in the dark you will get your butt kicked because he’s the king of darkness
  • You have got to have elders, you need older men in your life who can tell you no, you need life-giving hobby, you need real friends
  • A lot of guys get so busy and so prideful they isolate themselves
  • I am not in the pursuit of comfort, I prayed God don’t lighten my load broaden my shoulders
  • Think rhythms, not pace, the idea of rhythms is more biblical
  • You need personal rhythms, you need spiritual rhythms, you need family rhythms
  • If I can stay in those rhythms I can fight longer
  • As the lead pastor of Church Eleven 22 my primary roles are preaching, leading the team, and cast and fund the vision
  • When everyone is playing their part of the body, you can go for a long time
  • Faith is acting as if you actually believe God can do what he says he will do
  • Victory is already won in Christ
  • Success isn’t about what you do it’s about who you raise
  • I want my legacy to be that I was faithful
