Summiting the Mountain
Brisk doesn’t accurately convey the bite in the morning air as we summited Blood Mountain. The hike was not all that difficult, but the air and cold temperature made it a mental challenge. We had planned to be at the summit of Blood that day, so at least that didn’t take us by surprise. We planned for the fool weather as best as we could, but planning and execution aren’t the same things. Still, the hike was joyous. Though the trees were barren, there is still a reason why this area is one of the best hiking hot spots in the southeast. We were hiking on the old stomping grounds that allowed the Cherokee to amass a large tribe, and the Appalachian Trail formed our path and led us right over Woody Gap and to the Blood Mountain Wilderness area.
The summit was interesting. Our overweighted packs provided everything we needed for our days in the North Georgia woods. The gear, food, and other supplies provided an anchor all the way to the summit. Atop the mountain is an old rock structure well known for mice and a lousy night’s rest. But adjacent to the shelter is a granite outcropping with a terrific view of the Blue Ridge. The large rock offers a few places to rest while dodging the birds looking for a quick snack. The summit is a beautiful place to be, but it takes work to get there.
So, it is with the mountain of manhood. Prepare to be amazed and exhausted on the journey, but the trip and view are worth the effort. You and I cannot go it alone. We need reliable guides. Mentors, brothers, and friends give us the faith to keep walking and a known path to make it out alive.
