Take Command

What was your earliest memory? Strange question, maybe, but one of my earliest memories happened when I was six or seven. We lived in a small house trailer on the outskirts of a village called Coalton, IL. This little village became popular during the coal-mining boom at the turn of the 20th Century. Its size and possibilities attracted people looking for a simple life, hard work, and steady pay. The village was a great place for a kid to grow up, too. You could find me stomping in the creek (wondering why I couldn’t catch crawdads), at the basketball courts with my buddies, or at Aerio Lucchi’s Store getting some much-needed candy (of course)! Coalton is on the edge of cornfields and obscurity, but everyone seemed famous to me.

Back then, I loved superheroes! Superheroes were an archetype of heroism and manliness. These superheroes were bold examples of honor, courage, and serving others. All these lit me up like the flash of a fighter jet ready for lift-off! I longed to be honorable and courageous, and I knew that these had some connection with helping others. Healthy boys dream of nobility, and men are awakened when watching movies like Brave Heart, Gran Torino, and Lord of the Rings. Innate to every man is a quest for strength, a yearning for significance, and an adventure that requires that strength. Testosterone-induced aggression and risk-taking are inherent in men and boys. These are normal God-given physiological attributes designed for human flourishing, and a man’s health and fitness are normal outlets for that aggression and agency.

A health and fitness mission is personal- one cannot afford to go rogue or be passive when considering the task ahead. A man must own his choices, decisions, and attitudes toward his goals. Men have been given agency. You have been given the task of taking care of the temple that God gave you.
