The 3 C’s of Financial Accountability

In our fast-paced world, being a Christian man involves more than just going to work, being an involved husband/dad, and staying physically fit. It means being a trusted partner to your wife in all aspects of life, including financial decisions. Talking about finances can bring tension because it often uncovers hidden insecurities, so proactively pray together to thwart the Enemy. Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (NIV) And when you stumble, a gentle answer turns away wrath and a harsh word stirs up the hornet’s nest- i.e., equaling nothing but regret.

It’s touchy and tricky, but with God’s guidance and a couple of suggestions, you’ll be just fine!

Communication

Set aside time for open and honest financial discussions with your wife. Confusion increases when communication decreases. Communicate your hopes, dreams, and responsibilities if you want to be on the same page financially. Plan short-term and long-term goals and create a family budget to achieve them. This approach ensures you are invested in your family’s financial well-being.

Counsel

Seek wisdom from trusted advisers, even within your marriage. Reach out to mentors, financial experts, or friends who share your Christian values for guidance in making significant financial decisions. With all the tips and tools at your disposal, you can move forward confidently and with an agreed-upon plan.

Collaboration

Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” (NIV) Set shared financial goals and make a budget, ensuring blessings and financial wisdom guide your path. Ephesians 5:21 reminds us to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. That includes financial decisions. Divide tasks and decision-making fairly, ensuring both husband and wife have a say in the family’s financial direction.
