The Beauty of God’s Restoration Process

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” 1 Peter 5:10 (NIV)

We are currently in the middle of a 5-part series on the Men of Iron Podcast, called The Restoration Series, where we’re sharing powerful stories of life change and restoration in the lives of five different men. Each story showcases the journey from brokenness to healing, from despair to hope, and from loss to restoration. These are testimonies of how God’s grace can transform a person’s life.

When I think about the word “restoration,” I immediately picture the process of restoring a classic car. Imagine taking something that has been abandoned for years—rusted, beat up, and seemingly beyond repair—and then carefully restoring it back to its original glory. It’s not an easy process. It takes time, attention to detail, and an understanding of what it could be rather than just what it looks like in its current state. What was once a forgotten, broken object becomes something beautiful, valuable, and full of life again.

That imagery resonates deeply with my own restoration story. I can picture a man broken and beat up, far from God. Like an old, neglected car left to gather dust in a barn, the rust of bad decisions covered my life. I had wandered far from God. But in the midst of my mess, God saw me. He didn’t see just the damage or the wreckage. He saw me—the potential, the purpose He created me for, the man He designed me to be.

God is the ultimate Restorer.

Where others might have only seen the brokenness, God saw the potential beneath the surface.

As it says in 1 Peter 5:10, God will himself restore you. It’s not an automatic, easy fix. It often takes seasons of suffering, seasons of wandering to truly know God and the need for constant reliance on Him. But God promises to restore the damage caused by sin and suffering. He will build us back into who we are meant to be.

In my own life, it took years of wandering, hitting rock bottom, and facing brokenness before I could fully understand just how much I needed Him. The suffering wasn’t wasted—it was a part of the process. God used that season to rebuild me. So, if you find yourself in a season of suffering or loss, take heart. God is at work.

He sees you not just where you are right now, but who He created you to be.

Lord, even when I am going through difficult times, I trust in your power to restore me. I know that you can take the broken pieces of my life and make something beautiful. Help me to lean into you during the hard times, knowing that you are always working for my good, to build me up, strengthen me, and give me hope.
