The Careless Words of Stupid Men

In our journey through life, we often find ourselves seeking advice from others. It’s natural; we yearn for wisdom to help us navigate the turbulent waters of manhood and fatherhood. He may be soaring in the fitness realm and falling fast financially. His friendships could be stronger than the rock of Gibraltar, and his faith as weak as sedimentary. We are on the mountain toward masculine integration. No man today is a level 5 Gandalf on everything, all the time. We give and receive advice from friends, mentors, wives, podcasts, sermons, etc. Yet, not all advice is created equal.

In fact, some advice can be downright sabotaging, leading us away from our best version rather than toward them. Proverbs 19:20 reminds us: “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end, you will be counted among the wise.” However, the Bible also warns us against careless counsel. Proverbs 14:15 says: “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.” Let’s delve into this issue and learn how to discern good advice from the bad. You’ve probably encountered individuals who, with the best intentions, offer advice that seems confusing and unhelpful. They may not fully understand your goals, dreams, or circumstances.

Here’s a crucial point: When misaligned with your unique path, well-intentioned advice can lead you astray. It’s like setting sail without a map, following someone else’s course instead of charting your own. Discernment is a quality every Christian man should cultivate. Proverbs 2:6 drops this hammer, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Seek guidance in prayer and through God’s Word, and trust your inner wisdom, which the Holy Spirit guides. Seek counsel from individuals who understand your aspirations and share your values. These are the people who can provide guidance that aligns with your God-given purpose.

In our quest to climb the mountain of manhood, we must be discerning in the advice we follow. Not all counsel is created equal, and the wrong advice can steer us away from God’s intended path for our lives. Seek wisdom from trusted sources, pray for guidance, and remember good advice can be confirmed with the truth.

In making wise choices about whom to listen to, we can avoid the snares of misguided counsel and move closer to the goals God has placed in our hearts.
