The Journey of Confession and Accountability
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” James 5:16 (ESV)
A foundational part of the freedom in counseling was the act of confession. Being able to be fully transparent with someone else about everything began to shine light on all the dark places I was hiding.
In addition to our sessions, I surrounded myself with accountability partners who I could be brutally honest with from the small triggers and thoughts to the big falls that were so shamefully embarrassing. Early on in the healing process, they were checking on the daily decisions, temptations and results of my progress. They held me accountable while providing truth and encouragement for the falls.
But this process of freedom and restoration has taken years.
Honestly, it took nearly a decade to undo the two decades of brokenness I had been living in. And still today, while I can confidently say I am free from addiction, it remains the daily accountability with my best friend that makes that possible.
We confess and encourage one another through just about any and everything in our lives, from our home life to the workplace.
I am a much better husband, father, friend and follower of Jesus because of the freedom of confession.
And that healing has come as a result of confessing not only to the Lord, but to righteous men around me.
You’re not meant to do this alone. In fact, you can’t. You need the Lord. You need one another. Boast in your weakness, confess your sins. Find healing.
