The Power of the Process
Last time, I talked about recovery/freedom being a process. Could you pray for God to just take your addiction away, and Him actually, do it? Sure, He can. Will He? Probably not.
The chances that will happen are as good as you walking into the gym and praying, God, please make me look like The Rock (as you refuse to pick up any weights). Again, it’s not that He can’t God just sees the importance of walking through the process as being so much more effective for permanent change.
Walking through the process will not only benefit you, but the best part is, you can eventually help others through this life changing experience.
I asked in the podcast, If God just takes away your addiction, how would you help others that don’t receive such a miraculous gift? Well, you really can’t. Relating to others only comes by walking through and experiencing the battle yourself, first. This is what makes you stronger, mature and wiser and eventually enables you to use your experience through the process to help another man through his.
I have learned over the years how much more I can grow through the process.
I find myself spending less time whining about getting through it, and more time asking God what He wants to use it for. The process can be so much more impactful than the quick fix if we spend the time intentionally seeking God and His purpose in it, rather than searching for, or pleading for a way out.
Now, I am human, so don’t get me wrong, I do experience moments where I just want to curl up in the fetal position on my couch and pull the blanket over my head and hope it all goes away, but that’s where spiritual disciplines come in. I will talk about that next time. Until then, stop beating yourself up, pick yourself up, and ask God to walk you through the process.
Before I go, I want to encourage you to seek out a mentor. Don’t try to do this alone. If you can’t find one in your church or immediate circle, reach out to us and we will help. Here is more information on mentorship through Men of Iron.
