The Reward of Taking Risks
A friend recently told me a story of how he approached his boss about an open position in the company. By common opinion and even career experience, it seemed a longshot. My buddy was nervous, really nervous. What if he was quickly rejected? What if word got around the office? Can you imagine the embarrassment?
His bosses response was, “Submit an application and we will talk.” Four weeks later my friend had gone through 3 rounds of interviews and was officially promoted to this new position.
Life is full of risk-taking. It’s inevitable.
Mentorship is no different. Beginning the mentorship process comes with risks, but the rewards are eternal. Think about that. The reward lasts for eternity, not to mention the person you become on the journey. I think of one of my most impactful mentorship experiences several years ago. My protege had dealt with a lot of church hurt and trauma. He was back in church for only a couple of months when he heard about Men of Iron sign-ups. Despite his reluctancy, he had the courage to face his fears and he signed-up to be a protege.
He took the risk of opening himself up again. It wasn’t an easy mentorship, but it was a rewarding one. I was able to help my protege walk through some tough things, things that I had dealt with too. The rewards of that mentorship will last for eternity.
