They Are Not Your Kids

God knew your kids before you did. Long before you were thinking about names, putting together cribs, or painting the new bedroom, God had a good and perfect plan for your kids.

When God was preparing Jeremiah to be a prophet, a tough job when he was called to do it, God reminded him and encouraged him by saying in Jeremiah 1:5, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born, I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”

Later on, Paul reminds all believers in Ephesians 2:10, “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Not only did God know your kids before you were even thinking about them, but he also had good things planned for them so they could walk in them.

Our kids belong to God. He cares for them, provides for them, and has a plan for them.

So, if God already knew them and knows what he wants them to do, why do they need us? If you have kids, you’ve probably noticed that they don’t naturally desire a relationship with God. None of us do. We are all born as sinners, and all of us want things contrary to what God has planned.

As fathers, one of our biggest tasks is helping our children understand who God is and how to walk in the things God planned for them long ago. We don’t discover these things by accident; we need other people to help us understand who God is and what he asks us to do.

First, make sure that you are an example worth following. If you struggle with something that prevents you from being that man, get help. At Men of Iron, our whole purpose is to change culture one man at a time, so if you are a man who needs help, tell us. We can help you get started with becoming the man that God has asked you to be.

If you’re comfortable with who you are and know that you are pursuing the life that God has prepared for you, then learn everything you can about who God is and who God wants us to be. Then, teach your kids.

Make use of every chance that you can with your kids. When you’ve gathered for dinner, teach them about who God is; when you’re headed to bed for the night, round up your family and pray together. When you wake up, sit down and read some Bible with your kids.

It might feel a little strange at first, but taking this seriously is one of the best ways that you can be the best possible father for your kids.
