Thoughts on Good Friday

I was on the couch last night, on my phone, when out of the blue my daughter asked, “Daddy why do they call Good Friday good if Jesus dies?” It stopped me in my tracks, what an amazing question. I immediately thought of this video from Christian hip-hop artist KB.

“Why is the worst Friday in human history called good? Because now the worst sinners in human history can be called forgiven.”

The question from my daughter made me think back to my own thoughts and perspective on this day. I can remember having the same questions about Good Friday when I was her age. When you hear the word good you immediately think of happiness and and positivity. But the images of Jesus on the cross feel sad and negative. Good Friday marks the death of Jesus. But as KB so eloquently put it, the worst day in human history brings forgiveness to the worst sinners in human history. Wow, what a powerful statement! Good Friday doesn’t feel so good, but Sunday’s coming!

The death of Jesus on the cross is a good, good gift to those who believe.

Take some time today to reflect on the goodness of God, and the good gift of Jesus Christ. Talk about it with your wife and kids around the dinner table. Yes, Good Friday marks the death of Jesus. But Sunday’s coming.
