The Men of Iron Minute

by Travis Albanesius | Iron Rep – Ephrata, PA

Warning Signs

As husbands we are called to care for the people God has placed in our family. First our wives, then our kids, followed by the command to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12). If you’re like me, sometimes I get caught up in pursuing success in my career and even my hobbies. I run myself ragged trying to win, trying to succeed, trying to be the best I can be. But, when I get home, I have nothing left to give to my family. Can you relate?

You walk in the door exhausted to kids who are pumped that dad is home. They are ready to talk, play, wrestle and they innocently demand more of my attention. The first few minutes go well, and we push through, but as I make my way to the couch and put my feet up the need for silence and a place to unwind is calling. My son jumps on my lap, his knee lands in the worst place it could land (ouch!). My daughter wants to show me something she made at school; my wife wants to tell me that the washer is leaking. It piles up fast. And, because I gave so much to everyone else, I have nothing left to give to those that matter most.

Paul, one of the first pastors of the church writes in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 that “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Who are we called to love first? What is our primary culture? Yes, our families. Despite how many times we say, “I love you”, actions speak louder than words. If you find yourself impatient, irritable, easily angered with those that matter most, then the alarm bells should be sounding in your heart and soul.

Our first ministry, our most important responsibility, is our family. They get the best of us, not the leftovers.

If you’re tired today, talk to Jesus. Ask Him to help you find balance. If you can’t find your way out, contact a friend. And don’t just find your way out, seek accountability to stay out.

Let’s give our best to the people that God has entrusted to us.

Change your culture.
