Waves of Grief, Tides of Mercy

The room is still as people shuffle in. The faint sounds of sniffles broke the awkward silence. A low hum of church music melodically resonated throughout the sacred space as onlookers grasped at words and refrained from feelings. Few times in life are as solemn as these days. Laying there was a man who had lived a good life. His service to the church and community brought out friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. He had made a difference and did so without an awareness of its significance. People spoke well of his faith, work ethic, and attention to detail. His family had quality words to say. They laughed and cried as they sought distraction from the onslaught of grief. Wave after wave, grief consumed them, as the mercy of God would pull the grieved out to sea.

The faded, black hearse drove to a rolling, green meadow where wildlife frolic and play. Ironically, the man being celebrated once managed this same burial ground. His attention to detail and honor for the dead now provides his solace. His body was laid to rest, and his faith was celebrated. The celebration of a believer’s resurrection won the day. The preacher and family all give homage to his faith in Christ and the promise he now possessed. Many people speak of this blessing as they reflect on the last years of this man’s failing health. His mind slipped away in preparation to be with Jesus. This man’s investment in others left a legacy of dividends.

If you were in that casket, what would people be saying?

How involved were you in your community?

How did you live? How did you love?

Live this day considering that day.

Be a better man.
