What My Seven-Year Old Daughter is Teaching Me About God
We talked the other day about our greatest achievements in life. Not careers, not awards, not financial success. But our greatest achievement in life should be knowing Jesus and making Him known. Recently I started reading the Jesus Calling 365 kids devotional with my soon-to-be eight-year old daughter. Happy Birthday Pearl! As I husband and father who loves Jesus, I want to point my family to Jesus.
I’m sure you have heard this saying hundreds of times before, “Our mission field starts at home.”
As we’ve been reading through this devotional for weeks now, I’ve quickly realized that Pearl is eager for more of God. There are plenty of nights that I forget to read the day’s devo and as I’m kissing her goodnight she excitedly reminds me, “Daddy, we have to read our book!” As she wraps her arms around my neck and prepares to take in the 60-second devo, I can’t help but be in awe of her excitement and anticipation for reading God’s Word.
It’s a precious time with her and it struck me the other night, am I as excited as Pearl to read God’s Word and spend time with Jesus? I know in my own walk reading my Bible can easily become more of a task to complete than an excited anticipation for more of God.
As we read in Matthew 18:3 Jesus says, “Unless you become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.” It’s a beautiful reminder to be teachable and fully dependent on the father, like children, and approach our time with the Lord with a child-like excitement and anticipation. Thank you Pearl for showing me what it looks like to be eager for more of God.
