What’s Not Replaceable?

The office has the dull hum of production and the occasional gulp sound bellowing out of the water cooler. It’s just another hump day. Papers shuffling and printers doling out ink-infused lumber for the sake of progress. Workers squeezed into cubicles, and executives glanced out of their corner offices, admiring the hazy cityscape. One office is empty, but no one notices. Eliciting purpose, the walls are filled with inspiring quotes and success stories. The production lines are filled with people and products, and the middle managers keep their eye on both. Everyone up and down the org chart is reminded that they are indispensable and invaluable to the company.

Two underlings from human resources enter the unoccupied office and begin gathering up the personal effects of William “Willy” Thompson. Willy diligently worked for the company for 17 years and hasn’t been at work since last Friday. Willy passed away in his sleep over the weekend. With the pace of production, no one noticed the absence until now. As the HR representatives enter Willy’s old office, you could hear them talk about posting for his position. The speed of production couldn’t stop long enough to notice the loss—just another hole to fill.

Meanwhile, Willy’s wife is home writhing in grief. She can’t imagine living life without her husband of 28 years. She attempts to be strong for the sake of her two kids. Though they are adults, their grief is predictably heavy because the funeral director just left their home.

Dreams shattered. Life has stopped. Even if for moments of grief. Willy and his wife have been intentional with their kids- successfully walking the line between meddling and sound advice. They stood in the gap, and the kids matured to appreciate the love and support. Their family has not been perfect, but Willy and his wife have always been present with their kids, and their kids noticed.

Men, you are dispensable at work and invaluable at home. Never forget that.

Don’t make work your life.

Do something.

Dare greatly.

Be a better man.
