Where Are You Going?

Have you ever been lost? Like really completely lost?

Once, as a kid, I went hunting right after school. I went to a new spot closer to my house to get into a place quickly and then get home when it got dark. On the hike up the mountain, I jumped a nice 8-point, but I couldn’t get a shot. The good news was I saw where he went, so I broke off the trail and started trying to sneak up on him. I would get close every once in a while, and the deer would jump and run further away. I barely noticed that it was getting darker and darker, and I was getting deeper and deeper into the woods. I finally realized I was in trouble when I jumped the buck one last time, but I could barely see him in the low light conditions.

I had no idea where I was. I was lost, and now it was pitch black outside. If you don’t know where you’re going or how to get there, you’re lost.

Many of us are trying to lead our families, but we’re lost.

When you’re a dad, what are you trying to do? When you’re a husband, what is the goal? Sure, you want to keep a roof over everyone’s head and get some food on the table, but isn’t there more to life than that?

Proverbs 9:10 says, “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.”

If you want to be good at anything, the first step is to fear God.

Fearing God should be the foundation of your leadership. If it’s not, it’s time to rebuild. If you don’t know where you’re going or how to get there, fear the Lord.

I found my way home eventually. I got high enough on a ridge to see headlights on the road far below me. I realized that I could make it home if I could make it to the road. I started walking toward those headlights, and every time another vehicle headed down the road, I reoriented my course again. Eventually, I made it to the road, and eventually, I made it home.

I can’t tell you how to handle every possible scenario in your family. But, fear the Lord, and if you reorient your direction when he reveals something, you’ll get to where you’re supposed to go.
