Reading Maps

Let’s begin with a timely truth from Henry Ward Beecher, “A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It’s jolted by every pebble on the road.” Here’s a spring for the pebbles of life.

One day, Joe, Bob, and Dave were hiking in a wilderness area upstate New York when they came upon a large, raging, violent river. Full of zeal, they needed to get to the other side but had no idea how. They decided prayer was the best course of action.

Joe prayed to God, saying, “Please, God, give me the strength to cross this river.” Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs, and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours, although he almost drowned a couple of times. Joe was exhausted and proud.

Seeing this, Dave thought a little longer and prayed to God, saying, “Please, God, give me the strength and the tools to cross this river.” Poof! God gave him a rowboat, and he was able to row across the river in about an hour after almost capsizing the boat a couple of times. Wet and exhausted, he made it to the other side.

Bob had seen how this worked out for the other two, so he also prayed to God, saying, “Please, God, give me the strength and the tools, and the intelligence, to cross this river.” Poof! God turned him into a woman. She looked at the map, hiked upstream for a short distance, then walked across the bridge.

Humor is good for the soul. Humor is part of God’s grace to all humanity.[1]
