What Every Healthy Marriage Needs

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a dog, a mentor, kids, or a wife; relationships take time. No, I am not comparing your wife to a dog, so rest easy there, Fido. I am saying that all relationships take time and special care, and nurturing. In the chaos of everyday life, men might lose sight of this fact. A family man can become so enamored with “getting things done” that he neglects who he is doing them for.

Relationships are like financial investments. If you deposit more than you withdraw, it grows over time. Healthy and fulfilling marriages are founded upon how we relate to our wives. We can have six-pack abs, a swole bank account, and the neighborhood “to die for” house, but if you aren’t investing in your marriage, you are not nurturing your marriage, and a marriage that isn’t being attended to can crumble faster than you may think. So where can you start? Start responding and not reacting because that can lead to sleepless nights on the couch. Let’s get more practical.

Firstly, communication is the lifeline of any successful marriage. Take a moment each day to truly listen to your wife’s heart. Let her words, hopes, and concerns penetrate the depths of your understanding. Seek to empathize with her experiences, joys, and struggles. A strong relationship is built on open dialogue and mutual respect. Respond accordingly.

Secondly, practice patience and grace. Marriage is a journey of growth, and both partners evolve. Embrace your wife’s unique qualities and support her through every season. The seasons will bring highs and lows, so avoid overreactions. Remember to offer forgiveness readily, just as God extends His mercy to us. By demonstrating grace, we pave the way for healing, growth, and thriving marriage. Respond patiently.

Lastly, make intentional investments in your relationship. It sounds sappy, but wives usually love sappy, so embrace humility and lead. Take a minute each day to express your love and appreciation for your wife. Simple acts of kindness, like a heartfelt note or a thoughtful word, can speak volumes. Cultivate romance and keep the sex sizzling, honoring your commitment before God. Respond intentionally.
