The Men of Iron Minute
by Steve Glick | Director of Marketing Strategy
On Monday we talked about, Building Spiritual Disciplines as a Family. We need to be leading our family spiritually and modeling to our kids what it looks like to live for God. Your children are watching your every move.
What are you giving your attention to? I was recently convicted of this while talking on a podcast about establishing a healthy work-life balance. Typically when I get home from work, I often find myself checking emails or last minute work messages. When all my kids want is my undivided attention.
In that moment you are telling your kids that work, or time on your phone, is more important than time with them.

So this conversation on the podcast not only convicted me but motivated me to do better and set an example for my girls. Not just about establishing a healthy work-life balance, but establishing (or reestablishing) spiritual disciplines in my life. One practical thing I did when I got home from work that night was to turn my phone off immediately and leave it off till the morning. Instead of sitting on the couch scrolling through my phone, I found myself sitting on the couch reading books with my girls. It was a beautiful thing.
Another thing I started doing was opening up my Bible first thing in the morning instead of my phone. Something I have gotten out of rhythm with. The first 20-30 minutes of my morning are calm and quiet, with plenty of coffee. Instead of wasting that time on my phone I need to be in God’s Word. Not only is it essential for my relationship with the Lord but it’s a practice that my oldest daughter sees and asks questions about.
Just the other morning as I was reading my Bible she asked me what the red letters meant, it was a perfect opportunity to talk about Jesus with her.
So as we head into the holidays take this extended time at home to establish some healthy habits and rhythms in your home. Your kids are watching.
